THE CAR RIDE HOME
Young puppies sometimes experience car sickness, so bring several rags/towels. (most puppies grow out of this when they reach adulthood) If it is a long drive home, plan to make multiple stops to let your puppy out on the leash for fresh air and potty breaks.
THE FIRST NIGHT
Don't feed or provide water to your puppy to close to the bedtime. Take your puppy out to go potty right before bedding down for the night. Place the crate in your bedroom near you. Your presence will reassure your puppy that he/she is not alone. Be prepared to take your pup to go potty in the early morning until they're body adjust to sleeping in the entire night/morning. Remember, to always take them out to the same spot to potty. They will learn to complete their business quickly when they are taken to that location. And it reinforces that they are to go potty outside, not inside your home!
TRANSITION
Your puppy will be sad the first few days and will need to adjust to not being with our family in our home. Just be patient with him or her and provide lots of hugs, cuddles and attention. Puppy toys also will help to preoccupy your puppy. Sometimes the stress of a moving to a new home, can cause a puppy to have an upset tummy & loose stools. If this happens to your puppy, take him/her out more frequently. His stomach should settle down within 2-3 days. Keep an eye on him to make sure he is continuing to eat and drink.
FEEDING YOUR PUPPY
It's best when your puppy is young, to provide 3-4 meals per day, instead of free feeding. This will make house breaking your puppy much easier. We feed the 'Dog Dish Diet'(see our FAQ page for more info) and Diamond Puppy Food. This can be purchased at Tractor Supply as well as Amazon. Do not feed canned dog food to the puppy. The puppy can over eat until he bloats and have diarrhea and vomiting. Our family and animals drink well water. About 10% of our puppies will not immediately take to public/city water which is chlorinated. These puppies will need time to get used to the chemical chlorine taste in city water. If your puppy is not wanting to drink your water, you can add some orange gatorade to his water to disguise the taste. And then gradually reduce the amount of gatorade over a week period, to let you puppy adjust to the chlorine smell and taste. Or you can provide your puppy filtered or bottled water.
CRATE TRAINING/HOUSE TRAINING
As soon as your puppy wakes up in the morning, open the crate and taken them outside to the potty spot IMMEDIATELY. After every time he eats or drinks, take him out to the potty spot. Every time you take him out of the crate, take him out to potty first, before playing with him. It is good to establish a potty word or phrase and say it to him every time you take him to the potty spot, like, "go potty," or "do your business." And the last thing you do before going to bed, is take your puppy out. The crate is a training tool. If you buy a large crate, partition it off, so your puppy is only in a small area. You want him to feel like it is his bed/den and dogs do not like to go to the bathroom in their den. If there is too much space in his crate, then he might decide, one side is for pottying and the other side is for sleeping. Once he gets bigger, you can remove the partition. Many family have found that it works well to put up baby gates in the doorways in the kitchen or laundry room and then place the crate in that room, so that after you have taken your puppy outside, you can have room to play and engage your pup, while avoiding free reign of the house where they may get into something or have an accident. Once your puppy is not having accidents in the play space, you can gradually extend their boundaries.
SOCIALIZATION
It is very important to continue to socialize your puppy. Spend lots of time each day playing and cuddling your puppy. Take him out on walks and to the park where he can see other dogs and people. Let visitors come and give him attention. You do not want your puppy to grow up and be fearful of strangers. (no dog parks or pet store visits until your puppy is fully vaccinated)
VETERINARY CARE
Your pup has already been examined by a licensed vet before being approved to be placed in your home. To continue their care, you'll need to schedule a wellness check for your puppy to be seen within 3 days of picking him or her up. (This is directly connected to the health guarantee)
