First find the specialized therapist -- check out the link below.
Our therapist does not take insurance. So we pay out of pocket. But it worth every dime. Most therapists are NOT trained in how to approach trauma and attachment issues in adopted children. The goal is to help our children heal, and the right therapists help us work through the healing process. It is worth driving a distance to see the right therapist. With therapeutic parenting we want to give our children tools to help them deal with their emotions. As parents, it is our job to search out the experts that can teach these tools.
For my husband and myself, we have purchased every book we find on attachment and trauma....we try to learn everything that we can. We attend the therapy sessions with notebook in hand and lists of questions. We take healing seriously! It is a big deal for our children's future, not to mention that it has a huge effect on the whole family! We also encourage our children to pursue healing and keep an atmosphere of hope in our families so our children feel like they are capable of change.
Having children with an Attachment Disorder has truly made me be a better parent. Is it hard work? Definitely! But I am so much more sensitive to my children's needs and can address things at the mind, body and heart level!
Did you know that you can help your children control their emotions through tools the use their body? Well, that is a post for another day!!
Keep focused on the mission, fellow adoptive parents! And don't be overcome by the difficulties!
